This Week: Israel's Nuclear Weapons
|
Greetings, As astute reader Davis pointed out, the last issue of Nygaard Notes contained an obvious error: I admit that I wrote these words: "Immediately to the east of Iran is Iraq..." and "Immediately to the west of Iran are Afghanistan and Pakistan." Of course, the opposite is true, as I made clear in the very next paragraph, saying that "the largest embassy ever [which I had just said was in Iraq] lies immediately to the west of Iran, and one of the largest CIA stations in history [in Afghanistan] lies immediately to the east." So, there ya go. I spend three weeks trying to get all the details correct on this issueI even included a map!and I got the simplest and most obvious detail wrong. And then right: Iraq is actually WEST of Iran, and Afghanistan is to the EAST. My thanks to Davis, and my apologies to the rest of you. No room for more this week, so that's all for now. See ya next week! Nygaard |
I'm not sure which of the following three quotations is the real "Quote" of the Week. They have more meaning when considered as a set. Back in April the New York Times ran an article about "President Obama's strategy of offering Pakistan a partnership to defeat the insurgency" in that country. This project, said the Times, "calls for a virtual remaking of this nation's institutions and even of the national psyche." About halfway through the article the Times cited a comment by a former interior minister named Aftab Ahmad Sherpao, who said: "Fighting the insurgency is commonly seen in Pakistan as an American cause, not a Pakistani one." Now there's a psyche that needs remaking! Six months later, on the occasion of a visit to Pakistan by U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, the headline in the Times read, "Clinton Arrives in Pakistan to Confront Rising Anti-Americanism." The October 28th article included the following sentence: "Mrs. Clinton's three-day mission, conducted under an extraordinary security blanket, may be the greatest test yet of her skills as a messenger of American good will to an often-suspicious world." Meanwhile, on the very same day, in the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, we read that: "A UN human rights investigator warned the United States Tuesday that its use of unmanned warplanes to carry out targeted executions may violate international law." So what are we seeing here? An "often-suspicious world"? Or often-suspicious behavior by The World's Only Superpower?

I don't usually pass on action alerts verbatim, but this one came in from the Minnesota Universal Health Care Coalition just a couple of days ago, on October 30. The current fight for single-payer health care at the national level has been lostit seemsbut Representative Dennis Kucinich has proposed an amendment that "will not alter the federal legislation except to allow states to create single-payer healthcare systems if they choose to," according to Democrats.com. Minnesota is only one of a number of states where a campaign for a state single-payer system is well underway. It's worth remembering that the Canadian single-payer system started in a single province before it caught on at the national level. And a national single-payer bill is not totally deadit could still come up for a vote via something called the Weiner Amendment. So, here is the MUHCC Action Alert from October 30th, verbatim: The House just unveiled its Health Care bill and the news is NOT good: * The Kucinich Amendment, which would help protect individual states rights to implement their own single-payer health care plans, was stripped from the bill. * The Weiner Amendment, which would put national single-payer legislation to a vote for the first-time in the history of the House, may not get its vote... ...despite what was PROMISED by Speaker Pelosi. Single-Payer NOW hangs in the balance! Help us take action NOW and help fight for single-payer at the state level!! There is STILL an opportunity to get the Kucinich Amendment back in the bill and to make sure that Speaker Pelosi follows through on her promise to allow a FIRST-EVER vote on single-payer in the House. Democratic House leaders can insert what is called a "Manager's Amendment" into legislation, even when it is closed to any other amendments, and RESTORE the Kucinich Amendment back in the bill. * The managers are the majority and minority members who "manage" debate for the bill on each side. Please help us make calls to these "Managers!" Tell them you want the Kucinich Amendment restored into the Health Care bill AND let them know you want the promise kept to put the Weiner Amendment to a vote. The "gang" that holds our future in their hands includes: * Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Washington, DC, office (202) 225-4965; San
Francisco office (415) 556-4862 Call once, call more than once, and please tell others to make these calls. THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW! |
